Effect of Perilla Oil Supplement on the Levels of ¥á-and¥ã-Tocopherol, Superoxide Dismutase and Glutathione Peroxidase in Human Subjects

Abstract
This study was designed to observe the effect of perilla oil with or without tocopherol supplement on the peroxidation level and the relative proportions of different kinds of tocopherol and superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase
activities in
red blood cells in college women. Twelve college women were fed 13.5g perilla oil with or without tocopherol daily for 10 weeks. The levels of ¥á-, ¥ã-, ¥ò- and total tocopherol, and malondialdehyde (MDA) in plasma and RBC, superoxide dismutase
(SOD),
glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and hemolysis of RBC were observed at 0-, 2-, 10-, and 12- week of experimental periods.
There were significant increases in plasma total and ¥á-tocopherol levels at 2-win PE group (perilla oil with tocopherol), but no variations observed in PO group(perilla oil without tocopherol). Plasma ¥ã-tocopherol level at 2-w was lowered when
¥á-tocopherol was supplemented. RBC total tocopherol level was varied in a similar pattern of plasma ¥á-tocopherol and significantly increased at 2-w and then went down slowly to the original level at 12-w. Plasma MDA level was significantly
increased
at 10-w, regardless of tocopherol supplement. RBC MDA level was significantly increased at 2-w but decreased at 10-w , in PO group. In PE group SOD and GSH-Px activities were steadily increased until10-w and then decreased at 12-w, but there were
no
variation in the level of MDA upto 10-w. Howevr, hemolysis was significantly decreased at 10-w, regardless of tocopherol supplement.
